Essay on Childhood Memories of a Family Camping Trip

The smell of campfire smoke lingers in my nostrils. The breeze moves through the trees, creating a melody for all to hear. The bubbling sound of a brook can be heard far in the distance. Peace and tranquility settle upon my soul, and I feel that everything is right. Nature wraps its arms around me and I feel safe and comforted. I soon hear the sounds of childrens laughter and the whooshing of bicycles going by. I finally open my eyes and pull myself out of my sleeping bag. Goosebumps cover my flesh immediately, and I hurry to change into my jeans and sweatshirt. Once I am dressed in my camping attire, I decide to venture out to the cool, crisp mountain air. I take a deep breath and inhale the all-encompassing freshness of morning at†¦show more content†¦The sweet smells of hot chocolate and coffee fill the air. Everyone sits around the table and becomes immersed in their own conversations. As I sit at the table, I stare off to the west at the picturesque mountains surrounding me; the mountains that look like God hand-painted just for me. The blue of the mountains blend in perfectly with the green of the trees, and the sun gleaming across them creates a heavenly glow. This is truly a place covered in Gods fingerprints. I look back at the people surrounding me. I hear my grandpas laughter after my Uncle Rocky tells another of his crazy jokes. I see my grandmas content, peaceful smile. I look into my moms eyes and see enlightenment. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by the people I love most in a place that words cannot even come close to describing. This is my Venice, my Paris, the place I see in my dreams. The day passes in leisure and contentedness. The biggest concerns are the pesky flies and the occasional bike wreck. With a little lethal smell of bug spray, Neosporin and Band-Aids, even these concerns vanish. Most of the day is spent in laughter and tales of adventures and misadventures. The sun rests its head on the mountains and then falls asleep. We all gather around the campfire again. The orange-red sparks leap off the wood and make a crackling sound. string(48) " also available for purchase on the official G\." RA ONE- The extra-ordinary sales promotion by SRK I’ve often heard people say, film-making is nothing short of a gamble. And as any gambler will tell you, you’ve got to gamble huge to triumph huge. Going by this logic, Shah Rukh Khan is The Supreme Gambler of the year. We will write a custom essay sample on Ra One- the Extra-Ordinary Sales Promotion by Srk or any similar topic only for you Order Now What’s at stake, beside the big money invested in RA. ONE of course, is a dream, a vision, an aspiration to make a film which appeals to kids and kids at heart. In short, attempt a film that appeals to the universal audience. At the same time, it ought to raise the bar for Hindi films. Also at stake is SRK’s once-unchallenged supremacy as the reigning idol of Bollywood and that elusive thing called reputation. When you invest your repute in your dream project and stick your neck out, you expect nothing short of a mega-success. â€Å"I had a very clear of how we’ll market it. The first clarity was that we won’t have too many images of the film. I didn’t want it to be cluttered. I didn’t want it to be a hero and a heroine and their son. This is a superhero film and we had to introduce that. Whether people like it or not, my marketing thought is if you keep something in front of people for too long, they get used to it. So there was this big fear — when my costume comes out and me with blue eyes, will it be liked? Small considerations like this which you don’t think about while making the film, but when it comes out, people say, â€Å"you know what, your dadhee (beard) isn†t working at all†. SRK The daily promotional strategy of the media savvy Shah Rukh Khan seems to be working when it comes to publicizing his film ‘Ra. One’. He has pushed the film in every way possible – through multiple co-branding deals, in-film plans, promotional tie ups, marketing strategies, gaming and merchandising and much more. The ‘Ra. One’ous appetite of King Khan seems to be insatiable and everyone is being a part of it, whether they understand it or not. The film is thus ending up as the most promoted film till date â€Å"SRK’s strategy is similar to several Hollywood biggies where promotions start several months before release. Typically, big star cast movies and mega-budget releases such as Bodyguard, Singham etc start their marketing around eight weeks before release. But SRK has taken marketing to a whole new level for a Bollywood movie,† says Pritie Jadhav, chief operating officer, P9 Integrated – a division of Percept. The makers of Ra. One are on a marketing blitzkrieg Eros International and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment have brand tie-ups for Ra. One to the tune of Rs. 52 crore of which Rs 12-15 crore has been earmarked for online promotion, an advertising executive involved with the promotion of the movie said on condition of anonymity. Brand tie-ups that the marketing spends of the film have been considerably subsidised. Some of the brands with whom tie-ups have been effected are Sony PlayStation, YouTube, Nerolac, McDonald’s, Western Union Money Transfer, UTV Indiagames, Videocon, Nokia, Coke, ESPN Star Sports and Cinthol. Eros and Red Chillies have recovered part of their huge investment in the film through in-film branding, media endorsements, pre-licensing of cable TV and satellite rights, music and other rights Promotion of the film officially began as early as December 2010 when the first poster was published in all leading news papers across the country. The film’s first look was later unveiled by Khan on his Twitter page on January 1, 2011. Several months later, director Anubhav Sinha announced that he would be launching two teaser trailers of the film during the 2011 Cricket World Cup, a prior nine months before the film’s actual release date. Ra. One is not a Bollywood film that [the audiences] have seen before. The kind of size and magnitude that the film has requires it to be slowly introduced to the audience and that is the very purpose why we are starting the whole communication so early. â€Å"says Anubhav Sinha The film’s first theatrical trailer was released three months later to the public. As a way to promote the theatrical trailer, Khan was accompanied by the director on a five city tour, which included such places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Indore and Ahmedabad. During the same event, a 3600  ft long fan mail collecting audience wishes and messages for the film was also launched. Strategies which have caught the imagination of a population of over a billion Indians * Online Promotions: Approx INR 52crore is the estimated total budget shelled out for Ra. One’s marketing, in which INR 15 crore is for online promotions. Usually Bollywood film promotions only starts eight weeks before release but SRK took it in the Hollywood way, from January of this year with his first appearance in Twitter. Later it was the Facebook Fan page that started off its promotion from March SRK and Google – YouTube announced a partnership deal on mutual benefits basis. An exclusive video was created by Red Chillies (Khan’s production company) and was integrated into the YouTube Channel (Ra. One Youtube Channel). The company launched the official customized Ra. One channel of the film on YouTube(a first for an Indian film) where several song and theatrical promos were released to the public, along with videos of the film’s making, events and uncut footage. The channel also hosts games, including the first social game from India, and contests where participants can create promos from clips, music and dialogues of the film. * Merchandise: As a way to promote the film and increase its franchising business, Shahrukh Khan tied up with Seventymm to market a variety of merchandises related to the film. Products included original G. One tee shirts, coffee mugs, wrist bands, watches, mobile pouches, video cameras, as well as many other things. Similar products were also available for purchase on the official G. [90% of the 400. 000 stationery items and toys were sold in 15 days and 100. 000 more have been ordered. The makers spent 1. 5 crore on the mold for the G. One action figure. In addition to this, a jewelery line inspired by the symbol of â€Å"Ra. One†,as well as a series of HCL laptops with customized integrated Ra. One skin[59]were also made available to the public. These products are designed in-house by Red Chillies, and have been manufactured in China. By October, 50 products will be sold in more than 3,500 stores and e-commerce sites. Comics: Red Chillies Entertainment collaborated with UTV Indiagames to develop digital comics based on the film’s characters. Written by Khan, the comic featured weekly episodes and served as a prequel to the events happening in the movie * Video games: RA. ONE continues to surprise the Indian audience with new innovations on a continued basis. Red Chi llies Entertainment had declared a tie-up with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) to build a full cycle game on PlayStation platform. The video game version of the movie will be called ‘RA. ONE–The Game‘ and will be available on PS2 and PS3 (through PSN download). This is a newer direction for Bollywood to create a win-win strategy of both promoting the film as well as create a brand extension strategy for RA. ONE. The film, with its super hero touches, is appropriate to seamlessly use the PlayStation platform and connect with the In youth. * Print adds and billboards: Print ads have been booked in all leading publications while 1,700 billboards will show the superstar in his superhero gear. This by far the largest collaboration in terms of in terms of billboards for any movie . Somthing or the other we read about the movie everday . * â€Å"Bharat Bhraman† Tour: Shahrukh Khan is places for Ra. One. The King Khan has started his bharat bhraman and caught with his fans from Kolkata to Delhi. Shahrukh covered cities like Vadodara, Gujarat; earlier he was in Chennai for ‘Ra. One’ audio launch in Tamil; and he was in the cities Bangalore , Jaipur and Bhopal Vadodara. SRK did a 36-city tour, which will include several foreign destinations, and one of the highlights of these events will be a 3,600-feet-long fan mail collecting audience wishes and messages. Mobile Engagements and application: iPhone / iPad app for the fans, in collaboration with UTV’s Indiagames. To talk about the app – Ra. One is an arcade first-person shooter game where you can play as G. One to shoot bad guys down with their team leader Ra. One. The game comprises of three terrains – Trainyard, London Bridge and Wasteland with a total of 89 levels (called Waves in the game), starting with Wave 1 and unlocking as you complete each level. Movie themes ,songs , games , wallpapers all of which form a part of mobile engagments are easily accessible over the net * Television promotions: Appearances in three major shows (Just Dance , SA RE GA MA PA Lil Champs. Indias Got Talent)in 3 entertainment channels to participating in ‘kaun bangea corerpati’. Interviews and teasers are a constasnt attraction nowdays for the viewers . Televison promotion is playing a big role in promoting the film * Selling movie rights: Even before its release, Ra. One managed to earn a revenue of Rs132 crore simply by giving away the rights of the movie. The brand equity of film star Shahrukh Khan is unparalleled and his presence in the movie gives a huge boost to distributors and companies to get associated with the brand. Star India got the rights for Ra. One at around Rs40 crore. Apart from this, the music rights were bought for Rs15 crore by T-Series. The producers got a whopping Rs77 crore from Eros Entertainment to own the distribution rights of the movie * Release and Premiere: The movie would be released at over 3000 screens in India and over 1000 screens overseas. Apart from this, premieres at international destinations like Dubai, Toronto and London, which have a high popularity for Indian films are on cards. Due to various new marketing strategies adopted by the producers of the movie, Ra. One managed to generate a lot of positive word of mouth. If not for its success, this movie would definitely prove to be a landmark in the Indian film industry for its advertising and marketing strategies. Will promotional overdrive harm ‘RA. One’? They need to remain prepared to face the severe criticism if they fail to live up to the expectation by even a bit, and it will be difficult to match the hype because they have unveiled almost everything about ‘RA. One’. Audience expectations build up with such a high intensity campaign and the risk is that even a small disconnect can boomerang. That’s not the climax the producers would look forward to. The expections are have increased so much that if the film does not fair according to the standards set by the movie then the audience will feel cheated . Nevertheless the first reactions have come in from the trade analyst and they are optimistic about the film. â€Å"Wow! Brilliant! Mesmerising! Leaves u dumbfounded! Blockbuster! Indian cinema bar raisd! Saw portions of RA. . SRK surpasses himself. †- komal Nahata Watched more than an hour of #RaOne. Left me amazed. Technological breakthrough. At par with intl films. A superhero film that’s super! † – Taran Adarsh These reaction about the movie is only going to create a good word of mouth about the film and this will lead to audience booking there tickets Conclusion All said and done u like the promotions or not but u simply cant ignore the movie. Shahrukh Khan along with his team has made us think about the differentiated strategy implemented across the country . The strategy is here to stay . It has layed down a path that will make other filmmakers to think . As far as the box office collection goes it’s a sure short blockbuster. References * Saxena, Manjari (2011-10-24). â€Å"Ra. Information Technology Storage Devices free essay sample

Storage Functions of secondary storage Secondary storage also called auxiliary storage or backing storage is used to store data and instructions when they are not being processed. Secondary storage is much cheaper than primary storage and is also used to back up for later use. Storage media Storage media are the physical hardware on which a computer keeps data, instructions and information. E. g. a CD, a DVD, a floppy disk, hard disk. Storage device Storage devices record and retrieve data, instructions and information to and from storage media. Accessing Files Serial access means the records are accessed in the order in which they were stored. To read a serial file a computer has to read each record until it reaches the one required. Sequential access means reading or writing data consecutively. With sequential access the records are in a particular order and the records are accessed in sequence. Magnetic tape is accessed sequentially. Direct access or random access it is possible to go directly to a record without having to look at any other records. Magnetic disks, optical disks Zip disks The Zip disk is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system that was introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally, Zip disks launched with capacities of 100  MB, but later versions increased this to first 250  MB and then 750  MB. It is a small portable disk. Zip drives are used to backup important data. Advantages * Inexpensive (general) * Can transfer large files from one computer to another * Backup Disadvantages * Cost more than DVd’s or CDR’s * Not many computers have zip drives any more Magnetic Tape Magnetic tape is a ribbon of plastic material coated with a metal oxide film on which data is recorded as magnetized or unmagnified spots. The magnetized spots represent ones and the unmagnetized spots represent zeros. In microcomputers tapes are stored in cartridges. On mainframe computers the tape is stored on reels or cartridges. Magnetic tape cartridges can hold up to 1. 6TB Advantages * Reusable * Easy to transport and store * Cheap * Used for backups or archives Disadvantages * Sequential access * Limited shelf life- 2 years * Must be stored properly in a suitable environment away from smoke dust and humidity * Difficult to update files(cannot make a change to a record without saving over the entire tape) The diagram for representing data on magnetic tape is in the textbook page 10 chapter 3. Floppy disks A 3. 5 inch floppy disk is a removal flexible plastic disk coated with a magnetized material. The disk is contained in a hard plastic case. The term floppy refers back to the 5. 24 â€Å"diskettes that were used in the 1980’s and were actually soft and flexible. Each disk contains a number of concentric rings known as tracks. The tracks are divided into pizza slices called sectors. Data is stored as magnetized or unmagnetized spots. They are used to transfer data between computers and for backup of files. They are slow to access because of slow rotation speeds. They hold 1. 44 MB hold data. Advantages * Direct access * Small * Portable * Suitable for backup * Erasable, reusable and rewritable Disadvantages * Small storage capacity * Limited shelf life * Slow read/write speeds Before a disk is used to stored data it must be formatted. Formatting is the process of preparing a disk to receive and store data. When a disk is formatted the following happens: * All data on the disk is from a erased * The surface of the disk is checked for any physical and magnetic defects. Care of floppy disks * Keep your disks away from liquids, dust, dirt Do not bend disks or handle them roughly * Take care when removing or inserting a disk from a computer’s disk drive * Keep disks in a disk box * Do not leave in the drive Fixed Hard disk Thin rigid, inflexible disks made of polished metal. The surface of each disk platter is covered with a substance that can be magnetized allowing data to be stored as magnetized or unmagnetized spots. Like a floppy a har d disk must be formatted to set up the tracks and sectors. It is faster than a floppy disk because it rotates at a much faster speed. Fixed hard disks can store up to 1 TB. Hard disk The access time from a spinning disk with one read/write head is a combination of: Seek time How long it takes the head to get to the right track Rotational delay or latency time How long it takes for the data to rotate under the head Transmission time The time taken to read the data and transmit it to the CPU. Advantages * Direct access * Fast data transfer speeds * Vast storage capacity * Up to one terabyte Disadvantages * Not Portable Another type of hard disk is the external hard disk. An external hard disk can be used if there is no space in the system unit to house another hard isk. It may come with its own power source and is connected to the system via a special cable. External hard disks can be easily removed and connected to another computer, thereby giving them a certain amount of portability and flexibility of use. Diagrams showing how data is stored on magnetic disks The data is stored in concentric rings called tracks. Disk Sector: each side of the disk is divided into wedge – shaped slices called sectors. A track sector is an area of intersection of a track and a sector. A cluster: is a set of track sectors. A hard disk is a set of hard metal disks mounted on the same spindle. A cylinder is a set of matched tracks on all the disks. Optical disks Disks read by laser lights. They are made up of a type of plastic polycarbonate. The data is stored on a layer inside the plastic. A metal coating usually aluminum reflects the laser light back to a sensor. Main types of optical disks are Cd’s, DVD’s, and blu -ray disks. Advantages * Direct access * Fast data transfer speeds * Vast storage capacity compared to diskettes * Portable * Unaffected by magnetic fields Disadvantages Data on a Cd-ROM cannot be changed * Access times are slower than hard drives CD- ROM Compact Disk read only Memory The user can only read or access what is on the disk, nothing can be changed. The data is encoded and read optically with a low intensity laser light. The data is represented as a series of pits and lands. A pit is a little depression formed by the laser burning into the data layer when the Cd is created. The land is the part between the pits. Reading a Cd is done by shining a laser light at the disk and detecting the changing reflective patterns. When it reflects off the smooth surface land it is interpreted as a 1 bit. When the laser enters a pit there is no reflection it is interpreted as a 0. The speed of a CD- ROM is indicated by a number followed by an X. e. g. 48X, 50X. The higher the number the faster the disk spins. CD’s are used to store software, multimedia. Stores approximately 750 MB. CD-R Compact disk recordable Allows the user to write data onto the disk ONCE using a burner. The disk then becomes a CD-ROM and the contents cannot be changed. Used to create music CD’s. Stores approximately 750 800 MB CD-RW Compact disk Rewritable The data layer uses a phase changing metal alloy film. By using a high intensity laser light the film can be melted to level out the marks made by the laser burner when the data was stored. New data can be recorded using a low intensity light to burn new data. The user can erase and write to the disks many times. Used for backup. DVD Digital versatile Disk DVD- ROM DVD – R DVD – RW They are similar to CD’s but can hold more data. The tracks on a DVD are closer together thus allowing more tracks. Pits are smaller on a DVD. This means many more pits. The DVD stores approximately 4. 7 GB 17GB. Used to store Movies. CD –ROM –ROM and DVD – ROM ( more specific advantages and disadvantages Advantages * They hold far more data than floppy disks. * They are less expensive than hard disks Disadvantages * They data transfer rate and data access times are slower than for hard disks. CD-R and DVD –R ( more specific advantages and disadvantages) Advantages * CD-R and DVD-R are cheaper than the RW’s Disadvantages * They can only. be recorded once, so if an error occurs then the disk has to be thrown away CD-RW and DVD –RW (specific advantages and disadvantages) Advantages * They can be used many times Disadvantages * It is possible to overwrite data Blu- Ray Capacity 25 GB 50GB. It is suitable for recording, rewriting high definition videos. While Cd’s and DVD’s rely on a red laser to read and write, Blu- ray uses a blue violet laser. Advantages * Direct access * Fast data access speed is faster than with other optical media * Vast storage capacity * Portable * Users can copy the content of a disk a limited number of times Disadvantages * Expensive Care of Optical disks * CD’s DVD’s should be stored in their cases when not in use to prevent them from being scratched or getting dirty. * Avoid soiling the surface of the disk – hold it by the edge * Keep your CD’s clean by gently wiping both sides with a clean damp cloth from the centre to the outer edge * Do not write on the top side of the Cd with a ball point pen or other hard object as this can damage the CD. Use a CD marker instead. * Do not expose a Cd to high temperature or humidity for an extended period of time. Flash Memory It is based on EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read only memory) Flash memory is Non- volatile. Reading and writing to flash memory is very fast. This is because data in flash memory can be erased a block at a time instead of only a single byte at a time as is the case with EEPROM. Flash memory got its name because a block of memory cells is erased in a single action of flash. Flash memory cards are used in digital cameras. These include compact flash, SmartMedia, MultiMediaCard. Flash memory is also used in PC’s, cell phones PDA’s, MP3 players and video game consoles. Capacity -2GB – 16 GB. Advantages * Small * Portable * High data transfer speeds to PC’s * Large storage capacity * Direct access Disadvantages * Limited storage compared to a hard disk * May need special software to be used with PC’s USB drive This is a type of flash memory storage device which is called flash drive, flash pen, thumb drive, key drive, USB drive. They are small and plug into a USB port. Capacity 16 GB. Advantages * Easy to use * Convenient * Large storage capacity * Plug and play * Fast access * Direct Access Disadvantages * Easy to lose * Not possible to write protect the data

Of class, used in the right topographic point will non be affected to society, but some people will take advantage of this service to make illegal things the community. Analysis The grounds why I taking Impact of SMS on society because last clip me about send more than 100 SMS in one twenty-four hours and do me to blow batch money to recharge my nomadic recognition. I besides cheated by a cozenage, and every hebdomad will automatically subtract the recognition of my nomadic phone. That clip I have to register an history to look intoing the football unrecorded mark and every hebdomad will bear down me RM 3 ringgit, but when I want to deactivated my history, it have no manner to learn me how to make. So every hebdomad my nomadic phone will car pay RM 3 ringgit to them. This is a lesson I learn from it, we should careful when registry anything through SMS and read the status decently before action. We will write a custom essay sample on Impact Of SMS On Society Social Policy specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Impact Of SMS On Society Social Policy specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Impact Of SMS On Society Social Policy specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer SMS ( Short Message Service ) , normally referred to as text messaging, is a service for directing short messages of up to 160 characters ( 224 characters if utilizing a 5-bit manner ) to mobile devices, including cellular phones, smart phones and PDAs ( Simon Smith 2008 ) . There are 276 million radio users in U.S ; it reflects the importance of the U.S. people. SMS is the discrete more than telephone conversations, doing it to pass on when you do non desire to be disturbed the ideal signifier. Example if inside the film, through SMS we can non impact any individual and send message to anyone. SMS is less time-consuming in comparing to do a phone call or direct an electronic mail. Unlike electronic mail and instant courier, SMS does non necessitate you to hold a computing machine. A batch of man of affairs sends their advertizement along with the SMS, because it will salvage cost and clip. SMS has infinite parts to the universes. Some companies will utilize this service can publish immediate qui vives to their employee about exigencies and critical state of affairss. To direct of import information to major clients or providers, thereby guaranting that the information received is the appropriate individual instantly. The company can direct salutations to their clients or providers on assorted festivals or other occasions. Any updates or e-message can be sent to roll, employees such as gross revenues forces or proficient staff on the route any updates or information. Samarium can be used to direct a message to many people, from the contact list one or all users in a peculiar country. This service is called airing companies use the contact employee groups or online services, intelligence and other information users. Bank are utile in this SMS service, it made a part to countries such as dealing sedimentations and backdowns so much. Rather than travel to the bank for processing, whereas the latter has developed a assortment of ways, leting clients to transport out short message service through banking minutess. This allows them to finish their fiscal minutess with out of the office or and place. Whether immature or old, they have been contacted and cognize how to utilize SMS service. SMS allows the sale and purchase of goods easier. Merely to direct and have text messages for purchasers and sellers do non hold to run into face to confront when minutess ( Urmann 2009 ) . SMS has its ain portion of disadvantages besides. Some fraud group will direct you the text messages to demo that you have allegedly won in a lottery or promos. Then you will happen that these are non existent, will corrupt you some money. SMS has made some decomposition of the household in one manner or another. Rather than speak to each other and their kids, they will normally pick up the phone and text or drama games. Similarly, the kids communicate with their equals the most often used text messages and lose the quality clip with their parents interact. Sadly, their interaction, communicating, and even relationships are under menace so became addicted to the short messaging system for some users. We can see SMS has a batch of benefits, comparison to post modernism, it truly have a large different now. We compare compose a missive and direct a SMS to a individual, missive will takes more than 2 yearss to make the addressee at place, but SMS merely waste 1 or 2 minute will direct out to the addressee. SMS addition more Efficiency than write missive, now we can direct messages and confabs straight with each other. A batch company will through SMS to advance their merchandise, because it can direct to many people in the same clip, that no demand waste the paper to compose any missive to advance their merchandise. Letter will blow resource, clip and money. A company can direct out SMS to every nomadic user for promote their merchandise in one twenty-four hours, missive can non merely will decelerate down every advancement and a batch disadvantage and experience unsecure to it. The positive position, SMS brings a batch of convenience to the society. Its usage more often to countless, SMS is peculiarly suited for these sorts of short messages because SMS is much cheaper than naming person and giving the same message. Name person to supply the same information will ever necessitate more clip, thereby heightening the cost ( Gupta 2001 ) . Whether in concern, or each individual transmittal of messages, SMS and the constitution of its importance and in this universe can no longer be a deficiency of a service. Some people lack communicating accomplishments, but through SMS, they can show what they want. At any clip, every bit long as have nomadic phones, we can distribute our message to anyone. For the negative position, many pupils indulged in SMS confab, taking to pretermit their surveies, but besides expensive monthly measures. This tendency has become a bad wont of the pupils, so SMS rather a large consequence on them. Some people use SMS this method to make some illegal things, such as the embezzlement of certain groups, the repute of a individual to acquire money, some nescient people and avaricious people easy to gull them. Decision From so many different positions and so the good service of SMS, It provides a really convenient method of interchanging little spots of information between Mobile users ( Gupta 2001 ) . The ground for the immense popularity of SMS has been the fact that, direct and receives messages, non merely saves clip and lower cost, every bit good as the mechanism. In many instances, it is a comparatively more comfy than speaking by directing SMS message via nomadic phone. Mankind should hold good usage of modern engineering, instead than mistreating it to the exercising of ways to interrupt the jurisprudence. Worlds have been traveling towards higher engineering, better usage of engineering can do it flourish, if a good engineering to be used in offense by some people on theodolite, it can be scientific discipline and engineering may no longer look on this Earth has. A Room with a View Essay Essays

A Room with a View Essay Essays A Room with a View Essay Paper A Room with a View Essay Paper Italy Enables Lucy to Change and Become Her Own Individual in A Room With a View Lucy is presented with an opportunity to become her own person and look at things differently in Italy. This concept is used throughout the novel A Room With a View by E. M. Forster, in which a young girl named Lucy is able to see the world with a different eye and become a new person. She is surrounded with a culture and way of life that is much different than the one she is used to back at home. The free and open Italian setting enables Lucy to start a new life and find her love. In Italy, the city of Florence shows Lucy a life with much more freedom. This is illustrated throughout Lucy’s stay in Florence, Italy. She is unfamiliar with the new setting and all of the new culture overwhelms her. According to the Twayne Author series, â€Å"†¦ the ‘magic city’ of Florence elicits all that is unpredictable. Passionate, vibrant, violent Italy all but overwhelms Lucy. † (304) This emphasizes that this new setting is influential for Lucy because of all the new ideas surrounding her. It makes her aware of the possibility of this new kind of life that she can decide what she wants to do. Another example of Italy showing Lucy a more open life is when she arrives at the hotel, she was promised a room with a view, but instead she was given a room that did not have a view and she became angry showing her anxiousness for a new world. For instance Lucy says, â€Å"The rooms the Signora promised us in her letter would have looked over the Arno. The signora had no business to do it at all! † (Forster 3) This illustrates that Lucy becomes distressed by the fact that they did not get a room with a view and this supports the idea that she was excited to get free of her old childhood home and experience a new setting in Italy. The Italian landscape also helps Lucy experience a more free life by enabling her to become her own person and not having to conform to restrictions. This is observed when Forster says, â€Å"Italy was offering her the most priceless of all possessions – her own soul. † (90) The Italian setting took Lucy away from all the restrictions she had in her life before. She was free to think whatever she wanted about something and she could truly be her own person. Italy’s free and open setting clearly influences Lucy to change and become her own person. Lucy is held back by many social restrictions but Italy shows her around them and helps her become independent and find her love. To illustrate, in England, Lucy found that social classes were significant in society while she finds that in Italy, they are not significant at all. This is acknowledged when Forster says, â€Å"But in Italy, where anyone who chooses may warn himself in equality, as in the sun, this conception of life vanished. She felt that there was no one whom she might not get to like, that social barriers were irremovable, doubtless, but not particularly high†¦She returned with new eyes. (Forster 90) This is to say Lucy is able to see things with a new perspective in Italy. She sees that social restrictions and levels are not necessary. She realizes that people from all social classes should interact and that she doesn’t want to only interact with people in her social class. Similarly, Italy is free of discrimination while in England there was much discr imination. Lucy realizes she was taught many different views. A literary critic says, â€Å"Italy and the English countrywide encourage a free and open existence as compared to the cramped, stereotyped, middle-class British life. (Twayne 302) This confirms that when Lucy is in Italy, she discovers that there is no discrimination and people are a lot more open towards each other in the sense that they do not form false opinions about people by their background. She realizes that many of the distorted views she learned back in England about this are false. Furthermore, Italy gives Lucy the opportunity to become her own true self because there are no more restrictions that were there in England. For instance, Mr. Beebe says, â€Å"There was simply the sense that she had found wings, and meant to use them. (Forster 75) This asserts that in Italy Lucy’s ‘wings’ are now open and she has a lot more independence to do whatever she wants or think whatever she wants unli ke in England where they could be considered ‘clipped’. It is clear that Lucy’s progress of becoming more open and free is aided by the reduced amount of social barriers in Italy. Lucy is able to experience things she has never before in Italy with its more opportunistic culture. Technological advances in Italy enabled different social classes to intertwine and become more uniform. The creation of the trams enabled people to go out in other places where only higher-class people had gone. This is determined when critic Jeremy Hubbell says, â€Å"While in Florence, Mr. Eager notes the way in which trams enable people of the lower classes to take outings in the countryside†¦ Still, trams enable the â€Å"poor† to walk where only the rich had previously† (301) Lucy is able to experience life to the fullest, as she isn’t limited to a lower standard of living with the newer technology in Italy. The tram is only one of the many examples of how Italy greatly helped Lucy to her full potential. Next, we see Lucy’s affect to experiencing music. Forster illustrates the scene with Lucy going through a dramatic phase while listening to music. While Lucy listens, Forster articulates, â€Å"†¦Nor was she the passionate young lady, who performs so tragically on a summers evening with the window open. Passion was there, but it could not be easily labeled; it slipped between love and hatred and jealousy, and all the furniture of the pictorial style. † (Forster 23) Music in Italy introduces Lucy’s actual feelings inside of her, which are concealed by a fake personality. She is a completely different person with music bringing out her real self from her heart. Another thought is that Italy has brought Lucy to witness murder and also experience love. These experiences have caused her to change greatly. Cecil explains, â€Å"But Italy worked some marvel in her. It gave her light, and – which he held more precious – it gave her shadow†¦She was like a woman of Leonardo da Vinci’s, whom we love not so much for herself as for the things that she will not tell us. † (Forster 72) He describes how Lucy has changed so much because of her experiences in Italy. A person that has been kissed passionately and witnessed a murder is bound to change significantly. With aspects of Italy ranging from the arts to technology, Lucy has greatly been affected by the distinct culture of this new environment. When Lucy arrives in Italy, she is bewildered by its distinctive nature. Lucy utilizes Italy’s entirely different lifestyle to achieve her independence and find her love. She is able to transform her self by experiencing many new things, one of them being, finding her love. Often, a person’s life can be completely altered by the environment in which they reside in. Pleaes .Require ....Paraphrase..rewrttin...Reflection 300 word Essay - 1

Pleaes .Require ....Paraphrase..rewrttin...Reflection 300 word - Essay Example I was a bit sad to realize that it was the same I had leant in the Diploma. There was hardly any thing new in the first two weeks. Soon after that, the lab work began and we started doing tutorials. Although I have already had some practical experience with patients, yet it was a nice opportunity to learn the theory of my practice regarding interaction with the patients and their care in general. In the lab work, we were taught how to make the patient feel better with the minimum dose of radiation. In addition to that, I learned to work in a team and to reflect upon my experiences. I believe that the skill to reflect is essential for success in practical life. Concluding, I would say that I gained a lot in the first semester, and it was undoubtedly, a nice start for the degree. I particularly realized that in order to improve as a professional, we have to keep studying further. There is no ultimate destination of knowledge. In order to keep ourselves updated on latest information, we should keep in touch with the evolving literature.

The Mass Transit Railway Corporation and Miami Metrorail Essay

The Mass Transit Railway Corporation and Miami Metrorail - Essay Example The researcher states that the trains give administrations concealed in numerous different frameworks around the globe: stations have open machines, wheelchair and stroller availability (and the space inside the train to store them), glass entryways obstructing the tracks, and interoperable touch-and-go passage installment. However, following three many years of operation, the framework developed to only 25 miles, added stand out line to MIA and has never conveyed 200,000 riders day by day. Metrorail has not conveyed the guarantees of its initial advocates. Indeed, as Metrorail gets to be more important, it is doubtful that any more lines will be fabricated at whatever time soon. The province does not have the countless dollars important to manufacture such extravagant ventures. Likewise, the national government, which generally has financed huge transportation, undertakings fails to offer intention to help frameworks, for example, Metrorail grows. As an issue, Metrorail will likely remain a two-line framework for a considerable length of time to come. Support and upgrades ought to guarantee at any rate an additional 30 years of operation. Metro assembled heading masters in land, transportation, and metropolitan financing from academe, administration counseling, strategy backing, and government to request the best thoughts for creative methods for tending to Metros test. Educated by our companions and nearby execution measures, Metro is creating rules that the area can use to advise improvement of high limit travel ventures (Benson 1998). Actually, because of the expense connected with Metrorail extension alongside existing area utilizes and constructed environment as a part of a great part of the district, the majority of our future high limit travel ventures will be comprised of other travel modes. Metro needs to enhance the limit at over twelve stations: some of these stations are at limit today, and its complete eight-auto train project will bring many more clients to effectively gathered stations. The organization needs to construct new elevators, extend mezzanines, and assemble walker paths to take care of this future demand.

VLAN Network Security Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

VLAN Network Security - Research Paper Example Although, VLAN 1 simplifies the installation process of the switch significantly, it also makes the network vulnerable to unauthorized access (Liska, 2003). To improve security on switches, Liska (2003) suggested that the default VLAN should be removed, and each port on the switch should be added to the appropriate VLAN (P.S. Empty ports should be configured with no VLAN). In case if the switch does not allow removal of the default VLAN, then the active ports on the switch should be switched to different VLAN. Liska (2003) further emphasized that the port which is connected to the upstream switch or router should be removed from the default VLAN because it is tagged with all of the VLANs, and therefore, it can provide a gateway to all the traffic on the network if an attacker is successful in determining the default VLAN for the tagged port. The OSI model is based on layered model in which the communication protocol divides its functionality into a series of layers. Each layer provides services to its subsequent, upper layer, and requires services from its preceding, lower layer. However, each layer is isolated from other layers and operates independently to perform a subset of functions. Although, the layer independence provides interoperability and interconnectivity, it also causes security risks because if any layer is compromised, then other layers remain unaware of this (Wong & Yeung, 2009). In OSI model, the Data Link Layer (Layer 2) is very crucial because all the upper layers rely on it to provide the reliable data transfer across physical link – if this layer is compromised, then the entire communication session is compromised. Therefore, it is extremely important to secure this layer and take appropriate measures to mitigate attacks on this layer (Wong & Yeung, 2009). VLAN-based networks are vulnerable to various attacks. Many of these attacks can be initiated by those with the LAN access, from outside the switch.

The marketing strategy of business network transformation

The marketing strategy of business network transformation By definition, Business Network Transformation (BNT) is a marketing strategy in which companies will adopt a different path which normally companies would follow in order to be more competitive in this dynamic business world. The two major phenomenons that are most important from any companys perspective would be faster technological innovation with respect to products services and being a reliable supplier. Extension model: Companies adopt the extension model to spread out their business to gain new piece of business with increasing demand. The following are the important aspects of Business Network Transformation   Ã‚     Value proposition: It is important to explicit the type of products or services the company provide to its customers. Moreover, it gives a unique value between a business and prospects of the business. It is also a strategic asset which forms a basis for Market and its strategy , Business Planning , Partner and competitors strategy , operations, Customer service and Pricing . Customer Interface   Ã‚     Target customer: This describes how the customer segments are targeted to achieve a profitable growth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Distribution channel: This describes how the product reaches the customer by various routes. Relationship: This explains how the firm is linked with the customer through its various customer segments. Infrastructure Management   Ã‚     Value configuration: It specifies the way in which the various activities and resources of the business are arranged Core competency: This defines how the core competencies required in a business model are executed.   Partner network: This describes how to collaborate with business partners to harvest the benefit out of it. Normal way of running a business is to extract value from companys network which is a tangible asset that bridges the enterprise and consumers in terms of its connectivity capabilities. However, as explained in the definition, now the companys started adopting different way of doing their business by adopting different models whereby value is extracted from intangible assets like e-commerce initiatives, targeted advertising that will eventually generate service fees from performed transactions or commissions. This methodology of obtaining value from intangible assets will certainly outperform tangible asset -based connectivity revenues. The two terms, Present Mode of Operation (PMO) and Future Mode of Operation (FMO) are so vital in current business world. What is required from enterprise point of view is to have additional business models which will a best fit for enterprises Future mode of operation that leads to increase in revenue growth of the company and reduction in companies operational expenses by measuring the intangible assets of the business. Alcatel-lucent, a Tele- communication service provider company has been taken as an example. The company has invested in new IP, IPTV and IMS technologies in order to compete with other service providers who have expanded their network to convergence of voice, data and video services across fixed, wireless and satellite networks. In order to sustain in the competition, some of the service providers are making their current services less expensive, faster and better. Forming new Business Transformation Strategies are inevitable in current business scenario. However, there exist some inhibitions in the minds of service providers that these rapid changes in the business model might disturb current business models revenue. It has been estimated that voice and data subscription services contributes 80% of current revenue. It could be seen that a level of saturation is reached for the traditional model. Due to this saturation limit , the company Alcatel-Lucent decided has decided to go in for the advanced business model not only withstanding to allow the service providers to tap new revenue but to distinguish themselves from competitors by subscription-based businesses. Service providers have to perform critical assessment of Tangible and intangible assets within the legal boundaries in order to evaluate current business model. Return on Investment (ROI) is a main focal point for the service providers which can be achieved by tactical assets selling Real-world Business Model Innovations Due to market demand in communication industry there is increasing pressure from service providers to adopt new business models in order to penetrate through the existing market. The following are Business models in the fields of innovation Sponspered communications M-banking Broadband Community Centres Hosted Platforms Wholesaling Outsourcing Asset-sharing Content Aggregation and Brokering Targeted Advertising UGC and Communities Fulfilment E-Commerce and m-Commerce Sponsored Communications: Advertising through funded calls is one of the important innovations in the field of Telecommunication. There is appreciable change foreseen while comparing the conventional subscription model. Sort of incentives in the form of more talk time and paying lesser are the added benefits extended to the users if they accept to receive advertisement messages. Initially this methodology was put in to use by a UK Based company who manages to offer these sorts of benefits to targeted customers in the age group between sixteen to twenty four year of people, eventually this approach has yielded a reduction in end user access costs to a range between 20 to 50 % M-banking: Due to various socio-economical reasons , it can be seen that in most of the countries may not be having basic banking service to its people , on contrary using mobile faculty is so common in most of the countries . It would be rather difficult and rather expensive to manage transactions for especially for those having smaller accounts through the existing banking system due to inadequate number of branches exist in nations where population explosion is on the drive, especially in the rural areas. These shortcomings can be addressed through the M-banking which uses mobile technology. The technological advancement rather the strategy in the Mobile industry is to develop Mobile pre-paid payment engines that manage real time small transactions by the use of SMS (Short Message Service) which is really a less expensive measure to the Mobile users. This service of Mobile banking has been very successful in many countries especially in growing countries like India and China. A classic example can be quoted from a leading service provider of Telecom situated in Philippines , named as Global Telecom, who introduced a service called G-Cash service which has got electronic valet facility through which the user can send and receive electronically and payments can be made through short message texting . Due to its easiness in use it has been predicted by World Resource Institute that due to its demand, with in 5 years Mobile banking services will be extended to billion customers. Broadband Community Centres: Singapore is one of the typical examples for this feature. Community centres provide Internet facility to its residents there by offering services like e -government Tax payment, application forms, etc . In some countries like Australia, Broad band community centres assume the roles of Bank branches or government agents. Basically these centres serve the residents as a platform in which more industries and social organizations have a greater reach to the people, which become a cost effective measure for the people as well. Hosted Platforms: This approach is implemented by Alcatel-Lucent company in an African country Senegal where it hosted a mobile data centre where the service providers from four other parts of the world make use of it by providing GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) applications that run at a speed of 115 kb/s. Due to this service facility it becomes possible for the service providers are able to provide services to the end user at much shorter time period of 3 months. The main advantage in this business model can be seen from the fact that the service providers those who are in this need to pay to the host company Alcatel-Lucent as and when they use the platform. This is indeed a real benefit for countries which are under developed like Africa where the country may not sufficient users to attract Telecom companies to invest on stand-alone platforms to deliver advance services in the arena of Telecommunication in an efficient and cost effective way. Wholesaling: This type of approach is followed mostly in the developing countries where the network operator resells excess net work capacity to a retail service provider VNO (Virtual Network operator) who in turn offer services to consumers or commercial institutions Outsourcing: This approach becomes more common in most of the countries. Day to day work functions and managing the resources will be given to an external supplier. The business functions that will be offered will be diverged in nature. The external supplier will take care of related work functions of Data storage, financial accounting, Supply Chain management and HR functions like pay roll etc . The major advantage of outsourcing lies on the reduction in the total cost of ownership and extending timely service to the consumers Asset-sharing: The main advantage of this model is sharing overlapping tangible assets between services providers operate same networks in order to eliminate infrastructures that are overlapping among them. Due to this asset -sharing model the service providers can expand the area of coverage and reduce impact on environment to a greater extend. This approach again reduces the total cost of ownership and more innovative services can be provided to their consumers. Content Aggregation and Brokering: The main driver for this business model approach is the concept of UGC (User-generated content) and premium content. The user can directly purchase copy righted multimedia files through video-on-demand and pay-per-view models. What is important in this model is to ensure the integrity of the content that is purchased by the user by adopting digital rights management technology to verify the authenticity of the content. Targeted Advertising: This type of model encompasses interactive connection between people and the type of brands they are looking for through multimedia screens like TV, Mobile and Computer etc Due to the current technological advancements, these multimedia sectors become the essential revenue generating opportunities for the service providers. Premiums paid by the advertisers in this multimedia will add on to the revenue growth to the service provider which is quite substantiated. UGC and Communities: This model is growing day by day in the field of communication. The examples for this model are social network sites like Face book. MySpace, people information sites like TripAdvisor and YouTube. In these user is allowed to generate multimedia content which is distributed instantaneously to the other users. Once the content is created in these applications it can be amended, rated and commented by many group of users. The following are the common types of UGC that includes new sites, Photo sharing sites, service review sites, trip planners, social network sites, boards, blogs and gamming sites. In this concept, forums are used as the platform to share the users knowledge, experience on a topic of interest. The industry which has reaped the benefits out of this model is the broadcasting industry which has gained momentum due to persistent consumer interaction and better service orientation. Another mile stone in this model is getting the users feedback directly by introducing the option of voting via internet or mobile device so that pulse of the user is measured instantaneously. Fulfilment: This model ties the service provider and the user in terms of billing relationship leverage once the transaction is completed and service is delivered to the end user on third parties behalf. A typical example would be downloading a music album to mobile phone via internet E-Commerce and m-Commerce: This model envisages an electronic transaction in terms of buying and selling operations in the mobile services. The following electronic transactions are the typical examples for this model, consumers can use the wireless network infrastructure for Internet banking electronic funds transfers, Internet Marketing, SCM (Supply Chain Management), on line trading and electronic data interchange M-Commerce provides the end user an opportunity to pay for goods purchased using their mobile device. In other words, mobile phones are considered to be Virtual Credit Card with the usual securities in place to avoid tampering in any sort. It can be inferred from the above business model that the main drivers are reduce operational cost and increase top-line revenue. Either of the above action will lead to increase in business margin. Consultative Approach to Business Transformation It is also a newer approach being followed by Alcatel-Lucent to its service providers there by suggesting a right strategic direction by developing a structured and consultative frame work in the form of simple process Step 1 Identifying our customers PMO. Step 2 Understanding the customers top priorities and objectives Step 3 Identifying the customers intended FMO Step 4 Identifying the appropriate products, services and solutions It is anticipated for a failure if the steps are not followed which may lead to negative impact to the business results in a increase in the cost and decrease in the revenues and low margins. Failure to do so can result in negative consequences in the form of a negative spiral of growing costs and flattening or decreasing revenues and margins. The real transformation of PMO to FMO will happen after the service providers going through a transition phase in which the cost for operations will certainly increase due to deployment of new IP based system in terms of legal maintenance . Comprehensive approach to transformation has yielded good result for the enterprise. Strategic Impact Analysis The company Alcatel-Lucent has worked with both kinds of operators the modernizers and the comprehensive business transformers. . Not with standing to the fact that both operators yielded good result , however their strategies will be different . The operator Modernizers gives at most importance to technical details with tactical execution, where as the another operators emphasis is on emerging business needs and implementing strategic objectives . Creating Convergence The challenges are growing as the technology grows, hence the strategies being adopted by the enterprises and service providers should take a realistic and feasible approach in order to move forward with the transformation initiatives that nurtures Consumer relation and profitable growth . Hence creating convergence becomes so vital on the current business environment.. The following layers should be bounded together in order to bring IT and network environments connected at each and every layer of the network User exposure Business process Service abstraction Application Physical / Technical base It is not expected to have one-size-fits-all approach to transformation, however it is imperative to have each transformation initiative evaluated based on respective strategic direction thereby assessed according to its own characteristics and further tailored to meet the need .In this context what is more important is to have clear understanding of Present Mode of Operation (PMO) and to develop strategies to reach required Future Mode of Operation (FMO). Ensuring successful transformation also means finding a knowledgeable, committed network integrator partner that can act as a trusted adviser every step of the way. The best partner brings expertise and experience in IT and networks, as well as a comprehensive services methodology built on best practices and experience to mitigate risk, minimize complexity, capture new revenue, reduce costs, and position organizations to reap the business transformation benefits going forward. Today, the service provider delivers traditional voice and data services while introducing new, innovative media and entertainment offerings that generate new streams of revenue over a common network infrastructure. In addition, the service provider is reaping full advantage from Alcatel-Lucents field-proven solutions and integration expertise, enabling the provider to meet its strategic network and business transformation goals as well as commercial and operational objectives. Corporate Social Responsibility :: Social Responsibility Essays

Introduction of CSR Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a widespread topic in business issues and critical sector. In the fast fast companies are facing fast change and consumers always on the topic of traceability of food chain. Consumers and governmental organizations are increasingly focusing their attention on corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. CSR research has evolved over the last 50 years (Carroll, 1999). CSR is divided as a four parts pyramid (Carroll, 1991). Firstly, the meaning of economic responsibility, organization should be profitable. Secondly, the legal responsibility is very important for the company to obey the laws of the society. Thirdly, the ethical responsibility of the company to do what is right and philanthropic responsibility of the company is related to social, educational, recreational or cultural. Each factor is very important and there are lively relationship between all and when understanding the meaning it reflected to corporation.(Carroll, 19 91).As a foundation, Carroll (1979, 1991) integrated various streams of CSR research to define a model that extended corporate performance beyond traditional economic and legal considerations to include ethical and discretionary responsibilities. Article ‘Philanthropic’ Support for the Arts: Views from the Corporate Sector (Nigel J. Baldwin B.Bus. M. Moreover, CSR activities can enhance brand, customer satisfaction, employee’s rates and relation with government (Freeman, 1984). There are so many other benefits include improved financial performance, reduced operating costs, relationship link with customers and awareness of their needs (Jones, Comport & Hillier, 2008) Introduction The fast-food industry has been developing rapidly in the markets globally, at the same time bringing several significant changes in practices, work, and employment relations. Fast food is very much popular in every culture, it is spreading by a society, including commercial, political, media and other systems.Fast food restaurants are very famous and their products prepared in a standardized method that their customers satisfied with quickly and efficiently for takeaway. The growth and success has brought disadvantages to the workers’ rights and the conditions of work as well as providing well insight on how work and employment relation should be managed better. Primary Data Essay

Primary data is that which is obtained by soliciting direct responses from individuals being queried. These individuals are reporting their personal experience, attitudes and feelings. Primary data is the outcome of interviewing and survey methods. Secondary data is information obtained by reviewing the existing academic literature consisting of studies that have been done, analyzing what is â€Å"out there†, and determining trends or patterns of evidence from many studies. Problems with primary data include the possibility that the research design is limited in the fact that it is given to a strictly controlled, limited group, which may not be representative of the overall population. The results from a convenience sample cannot be generalized to the population. Factors including but not limited to gender, nationality, economic situation and others could be expected to impact the effectiveness of application of results to ‘real world’ situations. Sometimes researchers choose to disregard their own interpretations and to accept those of respondents at face value. This can be cozy but may lead to collusion: Atkinson has warned of the dangers of â€Å"romanticizing† respondents’ accounts (Anastas, 12004). Problems with secondary data is that the researcher was not personally involved and does not know how relatively rigorously the research was done; this may compromise his/her observations and analysis. Different methods used in qualitative research furnish parallel datasets, each affording only a partial view of the whole picture; this is a natural feature of qualitative research, in that it acknowledges that there are different views of reality which have equal validity. Therefore, it is effective to look for results that are comparable rather than in agreement, and which may be mutually supportive.

Genius

Genius Genius Genius By Maeve Maddox A reader has asked for a post on the word genius, commenting, Its part of the word engineering but, in French, engineering is genie, which I associate with Aladdins lamp. Then, there is the genius spirit that ancient Romans associated with places. This comment offers much to address. I’ll begin with the Latin origin of the word. In classical religious belief, every human being was allotted a personal spirit at birth. This guiding spirit was called a genius, plural, genii. The role of the genius was to govern a person’s fortunes, determine his character, and to conduct him out of the world at death. The Latin word comes from a Greek verb meaning â€Å"to be born, to come into being.† This quotation from the OED show the word used in the sense of â€Å"guardian spirit†: Let their Guardian Genii still be watchful. N. Rowe Ambitious Step-mother. In addition to the kind of genii assigned to individual human beings, there was the genius loci, â€Å"genius of the place.† This spirit presided over a particular place: Watchd by the Genius of this Royal place. Dryden To Dr. Charleton in W. Charleton Chorea Gigantum. The â€Å"emperor worship† that the early Christians objected to involved burning a bit of incense not to the emperor, but to the emperor’s genius: Christianswho would die rather than fling into the altar-flame a pinch of incense to the Genius of the Emperors. F. W. Farrar Witness of Hist.   Ã‚   Genius in the sense of a guiding spirit is applied to abstract nouns and to periods of history. One may speak of â€Å"the genius of Democracy† and â€Å"the Genius of the Age.† Nowadays the word genius is often replaced by the word spirit. We’ve all seen cartoons showing a character being tempted: on one shoulder sits a little angel trying to restrain him, while on the other, a little red devil eggs him on. This depiction reflects the idea that people have not one, but two guiding genii: (a persons) good, evil genius: the two mutually opposed spirits (in Christian language angels) by whom every person was supposed to be attended throughout his life. Hence applied to a person who powerfully influences for good or evil the character, conduct, or fortunes of another. Genie and genii came to be used for demons or spiritual beings in general. Arabic jinn, the word for a class of spirits that may be good or evil, came to be spelled genii in English; singular genie became the word for one of these spirits, for example, one that might be imprisoned in a bottle. The use of genius as adjective meaning â€Å"intellectually superior† and a noun meaning â€Å"an intellectually superior person† developed in the 18th century as art critics began using genius to describe â€Å"native endowment† contrasted with â€Å"aptitudes that can be acquired by study.† This question on a homework site illustrates how this use of genius has obscured the word’s earlier meanings: If Hitler killed so many people, why is he called a genius? The youngster asking this question has no doubt seen Hitler referred to as â€Å"an evil genius† by someone who did not understand the meaning of the term. The answer given to the student’s question reflects the same confusion: You can say Hitler was a genius because he was so good at manipulating people.   He was able to get people to go along with his ideas even when they seemed to be completely crazy.  Because he was able to do this, you would have to say he was a genius.   Sadly, he used his great talents for one of the most evil goals ever. Hitler might be seen as the evil genius who influenced German doctors and prison camp directors to do abominable things, but labeling him â€Å"an evil genius† without reference to another person or persons is meaningless. The term â€Å"evil genius† refers to any personof whatever degree of intellectwho influences another person to do evil: The evil genius of the second half of Hitlers career was Goebbels. Ernst Hanfstaengel, Hitler: The Missing Years (1957). Finally, gà ©nie is the French word for engineering, but not because it has anything to do with the word genius. French gà ©nie means the same things that English genius does. The fact that the French word for engineering is also spelled gà ©nie is a coincidence: it’s a homonym derived from Middle French engigneour, â€Å"person who designs and constructs military works for attack and defense.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Casting and Data Type Conversions in VB.NET

Casting and Data Type Conversions in VB.NET Casting is the process of converting one data type to another, for example, from an Integer type to a String type. Some operations in VB.NET require specific data types to work. Casting creates the type you need. The first article in this two-part series, Casting and Data Type Conversions in VB.NET, introduces casting. This article describes the three operators you can use to cast in VB.NET - DirectCast, CType and TryCast - and compares their performance. Performance is one of the big differences between the three casting operators according to Microsoft and other articles. For example, Microsoft is usually careful to warn that, DirectCast ... can provide somewhat better performance than CType when converting to and from data type Object. (Emphasis added.) I decided to write some code to check. But first a word of caution. Dan Appleman, one of the founders of the technical book publisher Apress and a reliable technical guru, once told me that benchmarking performance is much harder to do correctly than most people realize. There are factors like machine performance, other processes that might be running in parallel, optimization like memory caching or compiler optimization, and errors in your assumptions about what the code is actually doing. In these benchmarks, I have tried to eliminate apples and oranges comparison errors and all tests have been run with the release build. But there still might be errors in these results. If you notice any, please let me know. The three casting operators are: DirectCastCTypeTryCast In practical fact, you will usually find that the requirements of your application will determine which operator you use. DirectCast and TryCast have very narrow requirements. When you use DirectCast, the type must already be known. Although the code ... theString DirectCast(theObject, String) ... will compile successfully if theObject isnt a string already, then the code will throw a runtime exception. TryCast is even more restrictive because it wont work at all on value types such as Integer. (String is a reference type. For more on value types and reference types, see the first article in this series.) This code ... theInteger TryCast(theObject, Integer) ... wont even compile. TryCast is useful when youre not sure what type of object youre working with. Rather than throwing an error like DirectCast, TryCast just returns Nothing. The normal practice is to test for Nothing after executing TryCast. Only CType (and the other Convert operators like CInt and CBool) will convert types that dont have an inheritance relationship such as an Integer to a String: Dim theString As String 1 Dim theInteger As Integer theInteger CType(theString, Integer) This works because CType uses helper functions that arent part of the .NET CLR (Common Language Runtime) to perform these conversions. But remember that CType will also throw an exception if theString doesnt contain something that can be converted to an Integer. If theres a possibility that the string isnt an integer like this ... Dim theString As String George ... then no casting operator will work. Even TryCast wont work with Integer because its a value type. In a case like this, you would have to use validity checking, such as the TypeOf operator, to check your data before trying to cast it. Microsofts documentation for DirectCast specifically mentions casting with an Object type so thats what I used in my first performance test. Testing begins on the next page! DirectCast will usually use an Object type, so thats what I used in my first performance test. To include TryCast in the test, I also included an If block since nearly all programs that use TryCast will have one. In this case, however, it will never be executed. Heres the code that compares all three when casting an Object to a String: Dim theTime As New Stopwatch() Dim theString As String Dim theObject As Object An Object Dim theIterations As Integer CInt(Iterations.Text) * 1000000 DirectCast Test theTime.Start() For i 0 To theIterations theString DirectCast(theObject, String) Next theTime.Stop() DirectCastTime.Text theTime.ElapsedMilliseconds.ToString CType Test theTime.Restart() For i As Integer 0 To theIterations theString CType(theObject, String) Next theTime.Stop() CTypeTime.Text theTime.ElapsedMilliseconds.ToString TryCast Test theTime.Restart() For i As Integer 0 To theIterations theString TryCast(theObject, String) If theString Is Nothing Then MsgBox(This should never display) End If Next theTime.Stop() TryCastTime.Text theTime.ElapsedMilliseconds.ToString This initial test seems to show that Microsoft is right on target. Heres the result. (Experiments with larger and smaller numbers of iterations as well as repeated tests under different conditions didnt show any significant differences from this result.) Click Here to display the illustration DirectCast and TryCast were similar at 323 and 356 milliseconds, but CType took over three times as much time at 1018 milliseconds. When casting reference types like this, you pay for the flexibility of CType in performance. But does it always work this way? The Microsoft example in their page for DirectCast is mainly useful for telling you what wont work using DirectCast, not what will. Heres the Microsoft example: Dim q As Object 2.37 Dim i As Integer CType(q, Integer) The following conversion fails at run time Dim j As Integer DirectCast(q, Integer) Dim f As New System.Windows.Forms.Form Dim c As System.Windows.Forms.Control The following conversion succeeds. c DirectCast(f, System.Windows.Forms.Control) In other words, you cant use DirectCast (or TryCast, although they dont mention it here) to cast an Object type to an Integer type, but you can use DirectCast to cast a Form type to a Control type. Lets check the performance of Microsofts example of what will work with DirectCast. Using the same code template shown above, substitute ... c DirectCast(f, System.Windows.Forms.Control) ... into the code along with similar substitutions for CType and TryCast. The results are a little surprising. Click Here to display the illustration DirectCast was actually the slowest of the three choices at 145 milliseconds. CType is just a little quicker at 127 milliseconds but TryCast, including an If block, is the quickest at 77 milliseconds. I also tried writing my own objects: Class ParentClass ... End Class Class ChildClass Inherits ParentClass ... End Class I got similar results. It appears that if youre not casting an Object type, youre better off not using DirectCast.

Commentary for Plato,s allegory of the cave Essay

Commentary for Plato,s allegory of the cave - Essay Example Being a Greek philosopher of his era, Plato adopts a common way to narrate the story through series of conversations between Socrates – his mentor, and Glaucon – a student. In the dialogue, Socrates instructs his student to imagine a cave, where prisoners are held. They are all chained and immobile. They can only see in front of them where there is a wall. There is a fire behind the prisoners which they cant see. There is also a passage where they can walk. The prisoners carry objects with different shapes and figures. They are like puppeteers, behind a window-dressing, because they can see the flickering reflection of the object they carry on the wall and believe that they are real. However the shadowy representations are not the real image. The plot offers a twist. Socrates is to free one of the prisoners from his chains, so that he can turn around and see that the images which his fellow prisoners believe to be true are only reflections produced from the fire behind them. The liberated prisoner will also be allowed to exit the cave. The light of the sun to which his eyes are not accustomed may blind him. Now in the outside world, he can see different dimensions like the reflection of his image in the water. The prisoner now learns how wrong his fellow cave companions were. However, even if the enlightened attempts to explain the true nature of the shadowy images and the real ones, the other prisoners will not believe him, because they dont hold any other perceptions of the world in order to compare the two. One of Platos predominant ideas (and of Socrates too) is that of the form of things. This is explained in the allegory with the help of reflections. The world consists of forms – ideal and perfect, however people can only filter them as reflections through their eyes. Thus, human beings can grasp half images of these reflections

Module 2 SLP Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Module 2 SLP - Coursework Example The clipboard need to uses Mckinsey 7s framework. The framework got its name from a consulting company, Mckinsey and company, which had conducted research and industry (Pascale & Athos, 1981; Peters &Waterman, 1982). The model identified seven variables which the authors called ‘levers’ all began with the letter ‘S’. The seven variables include structure, strategy, system, skills, style, staff and shared values. Other variables exist but the 7S are very important because they can neutralize the effects of other variables and external environment (Elson 2012). Structure is the skeleton of the organizational chart. Strategy is the plan or course of action used in allocating resources to achieve identified over time. The framework defined system as a routinized process and procedures followed within the organization. The staffs are the personnel who perform vary activities in the organization. The key managers are also important in the way they behave to achieve organizational goal. The behaviour of managers is termed as style. Shared value is the glue that binds all the other 6S in an organization. Shared value has a significant meaning or guiding concepts that organizational members share. Most companies believed that the variables consisted of soft variables and important variables. It doesn’t mean that the soft variables were less important. It only meant that the other variables must be considered first before the soft variables can be put into perspectives. The soft variables include; skills, style and shared values (Elson 2012). It is also believed that the soft variables can only affect decisions internally when the other variables (structure, strategy and the system) could affect decisions both internally and externally when dealing with marketing and sales strategy in the region. The 7S framework doesn’t mention the external environment because they believe that the strength and
